Copper: The oldest one in this category and still used extensively on account of its durability and reliability. Easily manageable, they provide a useful option for carrying both hot and cold water as they are largely temperature resistant and offer superior corrosion resistance.

Their only drawback lies in their need to be soldered and the requirement of additional fittings to render them functional, which translates into higher cost.

PVC: PVC Plumbing Pipes are the modern-day alternative and are the optimal choice for transporting both hot and cold water.

Plastic plumbing products that are specifically designed to carry potable water are branded with an “NSF-PW” or “NSF-61” tag to indicate that the product complies with the health guidelines stipulated by NSF / ANSI 6.

Galvanized: Extremely popular till a couple of decades ago as the standard piping system for residential projects. However, high susceptibility to corrosion and rust has rendered it largely obsolete since it caused frequent leakage and seepage. Nowadays, they are usually used to transport greywater or non-potable water.

Brass: One of the best alternatives in this category, as they offer the guarantee of rust resistance piping system, especially if the percentage of copper used is between 67% – 85%. This particular form of piping system offers extreme durability since there is no corrosion in the interior and hence no friction loss. Easily attachable, they are an excellent choice when it comes to hot water distribution.

Majorly used for a larger volume of liquid distribution such as in pump fitting, water-tanks, and wells.

Cast-iron: Available in two formats

  1. Bell and spigot type
  2. Threaded joints which are comparatively more expensive

They are the heavy-duty alternative and mostly used for water distribution systems or underground installation as the main pipe or in drainage or sewer systems. Their excess weight, however, poses as a serious deterrent in their extensive usage since they require additional support while assembling joints and hence more expensive.
